The book “300 Ukrainian Artists in 300 Years” offers the reader a new perspective on the progress of Ukrainian art — from the Hetmanate to the present. Connection with European tradition and the formation of one’s own, Ukrainian art; classical constructions and the destruction of the established; the search for one’s own expression, style, and “self”; abstraction and reality; sensuality and light; history and the present — all this and much more can be found in three hundred short essays written by Petro Bevza — an artist who knows the process deeply from the inside, since he himself belongs to those who create Ukrainian art. The author preferred works of painting, where light plays the main role in the formation of the composition, there is a sensual vibration of color and harmony of plastic forms. In this book, Petro Bevza explores the question: “How is Ukrainian identity manifested in fine art in a broad cultural and historical context?” His choice of artists and their works, his coverage of artistic means and artistic contexts is personal, but it complements and expands the already well-known scholarly works of critics and art historians.
