"Andrii Lahovskyi" is an autobiographical novel that became one of the key texts of Ukrainian modernism and broke the taboo on public discussion of topics such as sexual orientation and the right to be yourself.

In the center of the plot is an intellectual, a book writer, and a professor who constantly reflects on his conditions, desires, and feelings and tries to survive in a traditional society. The hero's homosexual orientation becomes an important element of the plot.

This is a story about division and loneliness. He is looking for love, but not among women, but among men; he is looking for family happiness; he believes in high ideals that are being destroyed, he condemns himself to cabinet-making and asceticism, but he cannot withstand the temptation. In the end, Lahovskyi remains too dependent on the burden of traditions or simply incapable of decisive rebellion but chooses for himself the opportunity to remain "as he is."
