The children of baker Jordash - Rudolph, Tom and Gretchen - grow up in a small town on the Hudson River. They are teenagers of the 1940s: too young to go to war, but already marked by it. Their destinies are completely different: their parents' favorite Rudy builds a career in business and politics, the bully Tom aspires to become a boxer, and the proud beauty Gretchen searches for happiness for a long time and desperately. After their father's death, their paths diverge further and further, and each of them faces their own difficulties and obstacles. Will they be able to achieve their dream goal and not lose themselves? After all, in search of an ideal life, you can never live a real one...
