1996 was the year that changed everything for Maggie Dawes. At sixteen, she was sent to live with an aunt she barely knew in Ocracoke, a remote hamlet on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and all she could think about was the friends and family she had left behind... until she met Bryce Trickett, one of the few teenagers on the island. Handsome, sincere, and newly accepted to West Point, Bryce showed her how much there was to love about this breezy seaside town and introduced her to photography, a passion that would define her entire life. By 2019, Maggie had become a renowned travel photographer. She divides her time between running a successful gallery in New York City and photographing the far reaches of the world. But this year, she unexpectedly stays home for Christmas, struggling to come to terms with a dire medical diagnosis. As she relies more and more on her young assistant, she finds herself growing closer to him.
Together, they count down the final days of the season, and Maggie begins to tell him about another Christmas, decades ago, and a love that shaped her destiny in ways she never imagined.
