Orphaned as a child, 19-year-old Signa grew up with many guardians, each of whom was more interested in her wealth than her well-being. And they all passed away prematurely. Her only remaining relatives are the elusive Hawthornes, an eccentric family who live in Thorn Grove, an estate as glittering as it is gloomy. Their father mourns the loss of his wife by throwing wild parties, his son struggles to control the family's rapidly deteriorating reputation, and his daughter battles a mysterious illness.

But when her mother's restless spirit appears, claiming she's been poisoned, Signa realizes that the family she depends on may be in grave danger, and she enlists the help of a stern groom to catch the culprit.
