This is a book about one of the greatest tragedies in Ukrainian history — the Battle of Berestechko. Written back in 1966–1967, it was later added to more than once at all stages of subsequent Ukrainian dramas and tragedies — after the defeat of the 60s, in the hopeless 70s, and in the deceptive traps of the 80s. During this time, from a specific defeat at a specific Berestechko, the theme of this novel grew into the understanding that “defeat is a science, no victory teaches like that,” and therefore into the need to overcome defeat, which is especially relevant in today's critical times for our existence...
