The first part of John Updike's tetralogy about former basketball star Harry "Rabbit" Engstrom. His youthful sporting glory is behind him, so now Harry lives in a typical 1960s American suburb, suffers from an identity crisis, sells food processors and fights with his wife. He is confused and feels trapped in the routine from which he is trying to escape. On his journey, Harry seeks answers, although he is not even able to ask questions. Updike challenges Kerouac's myth of escape, protest and a sense of freedom: the hero follows the path of destruction, not knowledge. The cult novel of the 1960s is published in Ukrainian for the first time.
