Journey into the world of myths and female power
The book “Goddesses. The Secret of the Female Divinity” by the famous mythologist Joseph Campbell is a fascinating journey into the world of myths and culture, where each image of female divinity reveals ancient ideas not only about women, but also about the very nature of humanity. Campbell offers us to look at the images of goddesses through the prism of myths from all corners of the world – from ancient Neolithic settlements to the Renaissance. And what is most interesting – all these different stories and religions essentially boil down to one and the same image – the Great Goddess, who personifies the feminine principle and the essence of the universe.
This book is a kind of response to his famous work “The Hero with a Thousand Faces”, where Campbell explores the archetypes of male heroes. In contrast, in “Goddesses” all attention is devoted to female figures, to how through them one can understand human nature and the nature of the Universe. It turns out that myths are not just stories from time immemorial, but a real source of knowledge that helps us understand who we are and find our way.
