The Divine Comedy. Purgatory

The book presents the reader with the most recent Ukrainian translation of "Purgatory" (the second part of "Divine Comedy" by Dayte) by Maksym Strikha. The main goal of this translation was to move away from a certain "academicism" of the older version by Yevhen Drobyazko and not only adequately reproduce the content and poetic form of Dante's masterpiece, but also to give the reader an idea of ​​the living, not yet cooled "magma" of the Italian language just "sculpted" by the poet - in a combination of the most diverse styles (from the highest to the lowest) and sometimes even in certain errors in relation to today's established literary norm. The extensive preface tells about Dayte as a co-creator of the theological concept of Purgatory - a "temporary hell", where guilty, but not lost souls atone for their sins in order to be admitted to Heaven. Continuing the tradition established in last year’s “Hell,” the translator presents an anthology of Ukrainian poems related to the character of Dayte, written over the past century and a half: from Panko Kulish to Olena O’Lear. This edition of “Purgatory,” like the first part of the poem, is illustrated with miniatures from the 15th-century Siena Codex, attributed to the Italian artist Priamo della Quercia.
