Eilish Lacey is a young girl from a small Irish town growing up in the post-war years. Despite her talent for accounting, she cannot find a job. When an Irish priest from Brooklyn suggests that she move to America - to live and work in an area "almost like Ireland", Eilish decides to take this step, leaving her mother and sister at home.
In Brooklyn, Eilish gets a job as a saleswoman in a department store on Fulton Street and unexpectedly finds love. Tony - a fair-haired Italian from a large family - patiently and gently wins her heart.
But just when Eilish begins to believe in her future, devastating news from Ireland puts her before a painful choice - between duty and feelings, the past and a new life ...
