Description

Japanese writer, educator, and diplomat Nitobe Inazo (1862–1933) wrote his famous treatise Bushido: The Soul of Japan (1899) in English. The book immediately became a bestseller. In it, the author outlined the basic principles of traditional Japanese morality and ethics. In addition to Bushido (the samurai code of honor), he also considered other teachings — Confucianism, Buddhism, Shintoism — and moral principles that had been passed down for centuries by Japanese samurai and sages. In the work, Nitobe compared the samurai ethos with the spirit of medieval chivalry and the moral ideal of Ancient Greece.
