This book introduces the reader to one of the best examples of short fiction by H.G. Wells (1866-1946), a famous English science fiction writer. The characters of his stories are people whose measured lives are interrupted by something unusual: whether it is a scientific discovery, a wizard who fulfills all wishes, or simply a hungry ostrich that accidentally swallowed a diamond. The narrator, at the request of his little son, enters a "magic goods" shop. At first, it seems to him that it is simply a sale of props for magicians.
