The figure of Winston Churchill (1874–1965), a member of an ancient aristocratic family, British Prime Minister during World War II, and Nobel Prize laureate in Literature, has puzzled many historians. The German writer and historian Sebastian Haffner, who lived in political exile in London from 1938 to 1954, had a wonderful opportunity to research Churchill’s life.
