The first historical chronicle novel, telling about the split of Ukraine into two parts after the Black Council in Nizhyn in 1663. The country was actually divided into Left-Bank and Right-Bank, which provoked a fierce struggle for the hetman's mace after the death of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi.
Panteleimon Kulish is a writer, historian, folklorist, ethnographer, translator and Ukrainian classicist, who was born in the town of Voronezh (now Sumy region). He taught literature in gymnasiums and higher educational institutions. He is the author of "kulishivka" - Ukrainian spelling, which formed the basis of our modern one. He published "Grammar" - the first textbook for folk schools in the Ukrainian language. He wrote for magazines and almanacs, co-founder of the magazine "Osnova". He actively developed the Ukrainian language and culture, founded a printing house where Ukrainian classics and classics were published.
