In her new novel, Sheila Getty creates a philosophical story about love, loss, and the imperfection of the world. It is the story of Mira, torn between her love for Annie, who seems to her like an inattentive fish, and her love for her father, in whom she feels the gentle care of a bear. They live in the first sketch of creation, under the uncertain strokes of God the artist. Her father gives Mira a “pure color” — a solid round disk with a thick, solid color that shines like a polished gem. The gift becomes a kind of reliquary for her, a physical proof of her father’s love and presence. Through Mira, we observe the transformations and sensations that the human body experiences throughout life — from first love to orphanhood, at school and in the family, from friendship to romantic relationships — and at the same time question the artistic choices of the Creator himself.
