Before us is post-war Germany through the eyes of two eleven-year-old boys — Heinrich Brilach and Martin Bach. They are from different families in terms of wealth and social status, but with the same burden - each of them had a father taken away by the war. Yellowed photographs instead of landlords, the poor and the flourishing of the black market, young but already toothless widows, children with a keen sense of "immorality", adaptors, who hastily throw off the Nazi uniform - the author dissects the terrible contemporaneity not for sympathy, but to show the price of society's retribution , with whose active or tacit consent, the thirst for the destruction of the world turned into everyone's inner ruin.
