Description

Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (1836-1895) touches on the Jewish theme in a number of his works. The book contains only a part of the writer's stories from the Jewish world. They are easy to read, mostly sentimental. The characters of this largely unique cycle, despite the fact that they are scattered across towns in different countries: Israel, Hungary, Turkey, Poland, Italy, etc., demonstrate not only deep religiosity, but also true life wisdom. The writer depicts the everyday life of Jews, customs, and religious holidays. The stories, full of piquant contrasts, lively dialogues, and warm humor, reveal the best qualities of the sons of Israel: love of life, intelligence, ingenuity, irony, and mercy. The heroes of these works are never sad, and there are almost no negative characters. The publication is illustrated with expressive drawings and engravings by artists of the 19th century: French artists Emile Lévy, Alphonse Lévy, Henri Lévy, as well as Polish-French artist and illustrator Edward Louis, etc. The stories included in the book have been translated into Ukrainian for the first time. This cycle of stories began in Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's collection "Rose Alley. Jewish Stories", which was published in the series "Foreign Authors' Collections".
