The traditional role of illustration as subordinate to the written word—what Wikipedia defines as “an image accompanying the text of a literary work, newspaper article, etc., to facilitate the reader’s visualization of the content”—becomes completely inadequate when it comes to the role of the visual in the creation of picture books. Here, words and pictures are combined in various proportions to convey an overall meaning, complementing and stimulating each other, and often contradicting each other. Whereas in a picture book the images enhance and complement the text but are not essential to its understanding, in a picture book neither the words nor the images themselves will have any meaning if taken separately.
