Throughout his life, visionary artist Édouard Manet (1832–1883) sought to transcend and leave behind the academic conventions of painting of his time. Genre scenes, seascapes, still lifes or portraits - for Manet, art was always an expression of sincerity towards reality, and his works are full of deep sensitivity. Although he did not manage to achieve the fame he so desired during his lifetime, his descendants took care to do him justice and forever fix his rightful place in the pantheon of the world's greatest artists.
