In a shabby house on a shabby street in Madrid, Lucia Cotado quietly uses magic to ease the endless duties of a dishwashing maid. But when she discovers that the clumsy maid is actually hiding a talent for small miracles, her scheming mistress demands that Lucia use her gifts to secure her family's social status. What begins as a simple pastime for the nobles takes a dangerous turn when she attracts the attention of Antonio Pérez, the disgraced royal secretary. The king, still reeling from his defeat, is ready to seize any advantage in his war against the heretical Queen of England; and Pérez will stop at nothing to regain the monarch's favor. Determined to improve her own fate, Lucia plunges into a world of prophets and alchemists, holy men and speculators, where the line between magic, science and fraud is never clearly drawn. However, with fame comes the danger that her Jewish blood will condemn her to the persecution of the Inquisition. She will have to use her wits and will to live to the fullest, even if this means seeking help from Guillen Santangel, a vicious immortal familiar whose secrets could prove deadly to both of them.
