Description

Norwegian philosopher Lars Fr. H. Svendsen reflects on hope not as a psychological state or naive optimism, but as a fundamental condition of human life - something without which life itself loses its fullness and direction.
The impetus for writing the book was the reaction of Ukrainian society to the Russian invasion: amidst anger, despair and grief, it was hope, the author notes, that proved decisive - hope in the ability to resist, endure and preserve freedom. In the preface, Svendsen speaks with particular warmth about Ukraine, calling the Ukrainian resistance a key inspiration for choosing the book's theme. Hope appears here as a response to the experience of suffering, uncertainty and loss, as something that allows a person to live and act even when optimism seems impossible.
Drawing on the history of philosophy and the writings of the most important thinkers, the author shows that hope does not magically change the world, but it can direct human action—and with it the world—in the direction of what is possible and worthwhile. That is why, Svendsen argues, we need hope today more than ever.
