Leonid Ushkalov (1956 – 2019) is a literary critic and writer, Doctor of Philology, Professor of the Kharkiv National Pedagogical University named after Hryhoriy Skovoroda. For many people, he opened the incomparable world of Ukrainian literature, for several generations of literary scholars he was a teacher. However, first of all, he was an outstanding Skovoroda scholar: he began studying this topic in graduate school and did not part with it throughout his life. In one of his interviews, he said that since his youth he dreamed of becoming a philosopher, but became a philologist. Perhaps that is why the defining figure in his scientific world is the wandering philosopher Hryhoriy Skovoroda. The researcher also believed that the image of Skovoroda overcomes all revaluations of values and does not lose relevance. It is difficult to list his explorations dedicated to his beloved hero, but each of them became an event. But the undoubted achievement of the entire world of Skovoroda studies is considered to be the monumental publication of the complete academic collection of works by Grigoriy Skovoroda, which was arranged and edited by Leonid Ushkalov - the introductory article to it is also included in this collection.
Since then, the publication has been a valuable source for philosophers, literary critics, linguists, cultural scientists, teachers, theologians and other specialists who study Skovoroda's work, a reliable basis for translations of his works into other languages, for the preparation of popular publications. Ushkalov himself has repeatedly conquered the heights of writing: without losing an iota in facts and documents, he established a trusting connection with the readership with his stories. His colleagues emphasize that he knew how to write brightly, impressed with non-standard train of thought, polyglotism, play of associations, and beauty of style. The collection includes the author's diverse works. In particular, the investigation "Potebnya and Skovoroda: Catching an Elusive Bird", which Leonid Ushkalov considered one of his best academic works.
