“Philosophy” is a unique anthology of philosophical texts by prominent women of the 17th–19th centuries, published for the first time in Ukrainian. The collection challenges the widespread perception of philosophy as a male affair and introduces the views of six female thinkers.
The works of Sozhurne Trus and Harriet Taylor-Mill outline the fundamental ideas of feminism and abolitionism. Harriet Martineau advises on how to develop critical thinking, and Frances Power Cobb justifies an ethical attitude towards animals. Margaret Cavendish reveals the concept of infinity and her concept of living matter as the basis of the world, and Mary Shepherd analyzes the differences between perception and reality. The variety of traditions, themes, and writing styles of the authors helps to read philosophy in a new way.
“Philosophy” is not just a book. This is a call to join the philosophical discussion and to hear those who have long been neglected.
The book was published with the support of the Gender Democracy Program of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Kyiv-Ukraine Office.
