Painting from 1200 to 1500 reflects its era, which was shaped as much by deep religiosity as by progressive trends, and by economic prosperity as well as by devastating wars and epidemics. A religious perspective is complemented by secular themes and motifs, as well as a striving for realistic depictions. These developments took place both in book illumination—which was accessible only to a select few—and in the public medium of frescoes, as well as, from around 1300 onward, in panel painting. With approximately 500 works, the Gothic period provides an overview of the visual arts of this era.
