Austrian expressionist writer, playwright, translator, and banker Gustav Meirink (real name Gustav Meyer, 1868–1932) is best known for his novel The Golem (1915), which brought him worldwide fame and became one of the first bestsellers of the 20th century.
One day, the narrator confuses his hat with another hat, on the lining of which was written the name of the owner - Athanasius Pernat. After that, he began to have strange fragmentary dreams in which he was the same Pernat - a cameo carver from the Jewish ghetto in Prague. In these dreams, the narrator relives the entire story and eventually tries to find Athanasius Pernat in reality, but learns that the events he saw in his dreams actually happened many years ago...
