Description

Is it possible to see the past as it really was?

The end of World War II. Cyril Conroy builds a veritable real estate empire that takes his family from poverty to extraordinary wealth. And the first thing he does when he becomes rich is buy Holland House, a luxurious estate in the Philadelphia suburbs. However, what was supposed to be a surprise for his wife and the beginning of a new, better life, instead starts the countdown to the complete decline of their family.

Cyril's son, Danny, becomes the chronicler of this drama. He and his sister, quick-witted and sharp-tongued Maeve, are thrown out of the house by their stepmother. The two teenagers, who grew up in a spacious house with servants, find themselves in poverty and quickly realize that they can only rely on each other. This unbreakable bond saves their lives... and destroys their future.

“Dutch House” is a story of paradise lost that asks difficult questions about love, sacrifice, and forgiveness, about who we are and who we want to be. You can savor this novel slowly or read it as quickly as possible to find out how it all ended, but Danny and Maeve will stay with you for a long time.

Why you should buy it:

· “Dutch House” was a finalist for the 2020 Pulitzer Prize, was longlisted for the 2020 Women’s Literary Award, and was nominated for the 2019 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Historical Fiction.

· This novel is a real find for all lovers of family sagas!

Interesting facts:

· The portrait of Maeve for the cover of “Dutch House” commissioned by Anne Patchett was created by American artist Noah Satterstrom — they were introduced by Donna Tartt. Anne Patchett showed Noah two pages describing the painting, and based on this description, he created a portrait in three days, the original of which still hangs in the writer's house.

· According to the author, it annoys her terribly that women on book covers almost never look each other in the eye - their gazes are mostly turned to the side, their faces are shaded by hats or partially cropped. This is one of the reasons why she loved Maeve's portrait so much.
