Serhii Yefremov (1876 – 1939) – a prominent Ukrainian public and political figure, historian of Ukrainian literature, literary critic, full member of the National Socialist Youth Union, academician of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. He was repressed and died in a Soviet concentration camp.
Serhii Yefremov’s remarkable work “History of Ukrainian Writing” covers the Ukrainian literary process from ancient times to the early 1920s.
S. Yefremov formulates his concept of the history of literature clearly and in detail. The scientist’s attention is focused on the development of the principle of nationality. The scientific method of this concept is marked by deep individuality and accuracy of professional characteristics.
Serhii Yefremov saw three leading ideas in the history of Ukrainian literature: “an element of freedom for man, a relentless liberation current”; “the liberation-national idea”; "a gradual trend of nationalism in content and form, primarily in literary language."
The first edition of "History of Ukrainian Literature" was published in 1911, the last, two-volume, in 1924.
