Description

The historian, archaeologist, and ethnographer Dmytro Yavornytsky (1855–1940) wrote many works of various genres, large and small, scientific and popular, most of which are devoted to the history of the Zaporizhian Cossacks. But the main result of his work was the three-volume work "History of the Zaporizhian Cossacks". The scientist also worked a lot as a lexicographer, studied words and compiled dictionaries. He collected about 60 thousand words that were not recorded before.

The first volume of "History of the Zaporizhian Cossacks" by D. Yavornytsky is devoted to depicting the internal life of the Zaporizhian community. It highlights the issues of the origin of the Zaporizhian Cossacks, its socio-economic structure, life and way of life; describes the territory and borders, natural conditions of the lands of the Zaporizhian Sich. In addition to archival materials, the book was based on the author's many years of study of the topography of the Zaporizhian region. It was this study that the scientist attached great importance to, which is why he repeatedly visited all the places of the former Sich. Thanks to the clarity and detailed presentation, synthesis of knowledge, and the extraordinary skill of the narrator, the book is a kind of encyclopedia and still remains a standard of truly scientific, creative coverage of history.
