In the second volume of "History of the Zaporizhian Cossacks" Dmytro Yavornytsky (1855–1940) based on rich documentary material in a popular form comprehensively covers the history of the Zaporizhian Cossacks from its emergence at the end of the 15th century. to 1686. The book is based mainly on original letters of historical figures and contemporary acts; the works of chroniclers, as well as researchers of the author's predecessors, are taken into account. The scientist provides page-by-page references to primary sources.
The publication discusses the formation of the Cossacks, the participation of the Zaporozhians in the popular uprisings against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, highlights the role of the Zaporozhians in the struggle for the religious and national independence of Right-Bank Ukraine, and mentions the period of Ruin.
