Ghost Carriage. An Anthology of Gothic Prose by British and American Women Writers

Fear does not necessarily have to be associated with ancient castles, although it was in their settings that Gothic literature originated in the 18th century. The scary stories of English-speaking authors of the Victorian era cannot be compared with modern demonic works, where disgusting zombies, bloody vampires and demons act. Those old classics were often published in magazines intended for family reading. Therefore, an indispensable attribute of such stories is a fireplace and the traditional image of a haunted house: a haunted house. The genre of the Gothic novel, despite everything, is entertaining, designed not to scare or educate, but rather to bring pleasure, and therefore the fears here are not entirely real.

The new anthology of English-speaking Gothic prose includes only women's prose. After all, it was women who selflessly nurtured this genre, enthusiastically responding to Charles Dickens' request to contribute to his magazine "Home Reading". Dickens hoped that his publication would not just brighten readers' leisure time, but also enlighten them and contribute to their moral growth.
