Description

The first Ukrainian translation of the masterpiece of the classic of English literature Geoffrey Chaucer (c. 1343–1400). This is a collection of stories told to each other by parishioners who decided to go to the tomb of St. Thomas Becket in Canterbury. Among the narrators are representatives of almost all strata of the English society of that time, and their stories, very diverse in terms of subject matter, accurately reflect the style of their lives. This is a kind of encyclopedia of the life of medieval society. In addition to the brilliant, unique irony inherent in the style of this masterpiece, it is characterized by vivacity, infinite kindness, boundless trust in people and an extraordinary ability to admire even the terrible traits that its heroes sometimes display. The book is illustrated with fragments of the Ellesmere manuscript of 1410.
