1942. A young seamstress and dreamer, Claudette Pelletier, falls in love with a young Jewish man who is hiding in the castle where she works. Their love is short-lived - persecuted by the Vichy government, he flees, and she is left alone, pregnant and frightened. The Nazi occupation creeps closer and closer, and Claudette, who has a congenital foot disease, seeks salvation in Spain, leaving the baby in the care of a nanny. And when she returns a few years later, she discovers that her son has disappeared. She does not know that he, like many Jewish orphans, was saved by an agent of the Youth Aliyah organization.
1968. An Israeli naval officer, Daniel Yarden, recruits twenty-year-old Sharon Blumenthal for a secret operation in Cherbourg, not suspecting that his past is the key to her own origins. She sets out to retrace his childhood, hoping to learn more about the mother she barely knew. When the past catches up with the present, Sharon is faced with a dilemma she is completely unprepared for.
