Description

“The Chrysanthemum and the Sword: Patterns of Japanese Culture” is a study by American anthropologist Ruth Benedict (1887-1948), who, on behalf of the US government, studied the culture, traditions, and ideology of militaristic Japan during World War II. The researcher delved into the worldview and everyday life of the Japanese to find answers to questions that worried the Old and New Worlds.

Why were Japanese children’s feet placed in the form of hieroglyphs while sleeping, and how did this shape the social roles of men and women in adulthood? Why did the Japanese accept the American occupation so easily after their defeat in the war, in which their cruelty shocked the West? How did they really feel about the Emperor, whose role might have seemed ceremonial?

All this is discussed in a study that was supposed to help understand Japan during the war, but it fulfilled a much broader task — to understand Japan.

The book "Chrysanthemum and the Sword" is being published in Ukrainian for the first time.
