If death were inevitable, would you want to know?
Anne Stilwell arrives in New York for a summer internship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Instead, she is appointed as an assistant curator at the Cloisters, a Gothic garden museum known for its collections of medieval and Renaissance art.
There, Anne falls into a small circle of charismatic and mysterious researchers. Among them are curator Patrick Roland and Rachel Mondray, his assistant and muse. Along with them, Anne also catches the eye of Leo Bitburg, a gardener who cares for the museum's unique living plant collection.
They are all passionate about fortune telling. And soon Anne, who seeks the approval of her new colleagues, learns that their obsession with magic, and in particular with tarot cards, goes much deeper than it seems at first glance.
When an unexpected death occurs, everything goes awry, as all the employees become suspects. The game being played at the museum spirals out of control...
