1936. Deep in the Appalachian forests, in the town of Troublesome Creek, Kentucky, lives nineteen-year-old Cassie Carter - the last representative of a rare breed of blue people.
A lonely girl joins the historic Kentucky Pack Horse Project and becomes a librarian. On her trusty mule, Cassie overcomes slippery river rapids and dangerous mountain trails to deliver books and other printed materials to the poor residents of Kentucky.
On this difficult journey, Cassie, whom the mountain people call Voloshka, faces prejudice against her amazing blue skin and distrust of the new government book project. She finds friends among the harsh but sincere mountain people and strives to give them comfort, joy and a love of reading. Cassie opens the door to distant worlds hidden in books for those who have nothing.
The story is inspired by the true story of the Kentucky Blue Men and the mounted librarians of the 1930s.
