Beloved

Seth was born a slave and escaped to the free state of Ohio, but eighteen years later she still doesn't feel free. She's survived the unthinkable and hasn't gone insane, but she's still haunted by memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful Kentucky plantation where so many terrible things happened. In house No. 124, where Seth and his daughter Denver now live, the past and the present, the real and the mystical, the thoughts and feelings of the former and current tenants are intertwined. A woman is haunted by the ghost of her child, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: "Beloved."

Inspired by the story of slave Margaret Garner, Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner Toni Morrison dedicated the novel to the more than sixty million black slaves and their descendants who died in the transatlantic slave trade.
