Description

Molière is the stage name of Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (1622–1673), by which the world knows this French playwright and actor, the founder of the genre of high comedy, where he managed to brilliantly combine the tragic and the comic, the humorous and the serious. According to Molière, comedy should stigmatize human vices, deal them a devastating blow. “The most brilliant treatises on moral topics often have much less impact than satire, because nothing takes people for granted so much as the depiction of their shortcomings,” the playwright assured. And with good reason. For his most famous plays, in particular, "The Misanthrope", "The Miser", "The Bourgeois-Nobleman", "The Involuntary Doctor", "Funny Manners", in which hypocrisy, mannerism, arrogance, narrow-mindedness, stinginess, greed for profit were ridiculed, the author was exposed to criticism and outright threats from the bearers of these negative qualities. And such masterpieces as "Tartuffe" and "Don Juan" were repeatedly banned by those who had the opportunity to take revenge. The publication also includes other outstanding works of the playwright, which for almost four centuries have been delighting viewers and readers with unwavering success.
