Danylo Romanovych, the first king of Rus, is one of the main figures in the history of Ukraine. At the age of four, Danylo lost his father, Prince Roman Mstislavovych, and spent many years in exile. Thanks to his own talent, the support of his mother, and luck, the prince managed to return his father's inheritance and multiply it. His path was four decades of hard struggle with both the sword and the word. Having overcome numerous internal and external enemies, Danylo established himself as one of the most influential rulers of Central and Eastern Europe. The scale of his activities is evidenced by relations with the Mongols, the Holy Roman Empire, the Nicaean Empire, the Papal See, and with European states neighboring Rus. The pinnacle of his political career – at the end of 1253 – was his coronation.
Dariusz Dombrowski's book is the most complete biography of Danylo Romanovych today. Based on many sources, the author not only reconstructs in detail the life of this outstanding statesman, but also convincingly fits his figure into the European political landscape. This book brings the figure of Danylo Romanovych back from the shadow of semi-oblivion and opens up to readers the complex and turbulent history of the Ukrainian Middle Ages.
