The stories in “Besides Okhrim” are part of a large memoir panorama, where personal memories are transformed into a way of understanding time. As in Pavlo Volvach’s previous book “20+1, or the Land of the Dead”, here, through conversations, meetings, travels and random episodes, a space emerges in which private life constantly intersects with history. Carpathian legends, family memory, traces of the liberation struggle and the atmosphere of the literary environment are combined into a dense essayistic narrative. Here, different generations, voices and shadows of the past exist side by side, and memory becomes an attempt to see the imprint of a great history in human destinies.
