Description

Vasyl Makhno's essays are a separate space of his artistic and personal world. The book "Chickens Don't Fly" collects essays written during the years 2002–2023. Here are memories that are layered on top of each other, and journeys into the past, and autobiographical stories, and stories about others. Some essays resemble short stories that are woven into a single canvas, others - like a kind of journey through various spaces, and ultimately - through life.

Openness to dialogue with other cultures is one of the key features of Makhno the essayist. In this long-term conversation, we will talk about Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, Karl Emil Franzos, Federico García Lorca, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Witold Gombrowicz, Czesław Milosz, Danylo Kisch, Nikita Stanescu, Bohdan Zadura, and Janusz Schuber. In the end, we will visit the Holy Land, exotic India, and distant Mongolia.

The latest essays are united by the theme of the Russian-Ukrainian war: with the pain of tragedy and loss and with reflections on wartime literature.
