Description

Andonis Georgiou is a Cypriot playwright and prose writer. Member of the editorial board of the literary magazine "Anev". Author of 7 plays. Winner of the European Union Prize for Literature in 2016.

The play "My Dear Pralko" in 2005 was awarded the Cyprus Theatre Organization Prize in the categories: Theatrical Text and Acting. This work has been translated into French, Italian, Turkish and Hungarian. A characteristic feature of A. Georgiou's plays is the intertextual interaction with works of the Greek tradition: the dramaturgy of Aristophanes or the poetry of Y. Ritsos, or European theater and pop culture: "Happy Days" by S. Beckett and "The Disease", "Hamlet-Machine" by Heiner Müller and "I Was Lysistrata".

One of the central themes of A. Georgiou's work is the functioning of memory as the main mechanism for a person to realize his personality, memory loss as a kind of social dying of his characters, remembering and remembering as a process of "playing" ideologies, as a result of which a person can lose his personal self, create "false" memories acceptable to certain value models that exist in society as unchanging and unbreakable norms. Remembering episodes of their lives, A. Georgiou's characters constantly find themselves in a situation of defining the boundaries of normal and abnormal...
