Vytynanki is an ancient Ukrainian art of cutting out interior decorations from white or colored paper: ornamental, figured, plot, openwork, silhouette. It comes from the word "vytynaty", that is, "to cut out".
Plant or geometric ornaments, snowflakes, flowers, stars, angels, images of animals and people, various plots, symbols - this is not all that can be cut out of white or colored paper. Vytynanki can decorate a home for the holidays: windows, doors, walls, shelves, fireplaces. Modern vytynanki is also used for souvenirs, postcards and booklets.
Ukrainian vytynanki are characterized by clear patterns and concise form, mirror symmetry, a generalized silhouette image without naturalism.
