One of the most significant works of 20th-century Turkish literature, the novel “Madonna in a Fur Coat” by Sabahattin Ali (1907–1948) was published in 1943. The story of the mutual and tragic love between the Turkish young man Raif and the German artist Maria, who met in Berlin in the 1920s, was initially considered simply “another love story.” Only translations into other languages, primarily English, placed it among the gems of 20th-century world literature.
