The novel by the famous and popular French writer (1908–2004) is about a group of passengers who, having succumbed to a hoax, fly on a charter plane, each with a specific business, scientific or entertainment purpose, to a fictional country.
Very soon, after an Indian couple attempts to hijack the plane, the passengers are horrified to find out that there are no pilots, the plane is controlled remotely. Who organized this flight, why - a mystery that has no answer, and the flight itself becomes a kind of metaphysical image of the transition to the other world.
People, faced with a hopeless situation and knowing about the inevitability of the near end, begin to reveal unexpected facets of their character. The author masterfully depicts the changes in the psychology of the characters.
