It seems that the dark times of the Middle Ages are over, but rumors, superstitions and prejudices still live among people. Witch hunts continued for a long time. Anyone could fall under suspicion, being in the wrong place and at the wrong time. This happened to the main character of the novel - Maria Schweidler - the daughter of a pastor.
She, to her misfortune, found an amber vein on a nearby mountain. Because of this, she experienced many misfortunes and trials, finding herself one step away from her death at the stake, since she was declared a witch. True, thanks to a happy coincidence, the tragedy was avoided, and this time good triumphed over evil.
