“Marble Woman” is a literary biographical story about the life and work of Olena Pchilka, an outstanding Ukrainian intellectual and artist, from her childhood to the last days of her life.
Based on memoirs, letters, and historical facts, Olena Volynska builds a vivid, emotionally rich image of her heroine: an inquisitive, purposeful, but also vulnerable woman. Through the prism of her fate, she introduces us to the everyday life, traditions, and social problems of contemporary Ukraine, as well as prominent figures of Ukrainian cultural life.
The story combines documentary accuracy with artistic sensuality, revealing the formation of a personality who left a deep mark on the history of Ukrainian culture.
“Marble Woman” is an attempt to give back the voice to a person who had the strength to be Ukrainian when it was dangerous. This is a book about memory, resistance, female power, and the fire of the word that never goes out.
