After investigating a series of murders at a monastery in Scarns, the famous London lawyer Matthew Shardlake successfully conducts land cases that bring considerable profit and provide a decent life. But unexpectedly he receives a letter from an old client asking him to help save a young niece convicted of the murder of her cousin. Time is running out, the girl is stubbornly silent, and their relatives are trying by all means to achieve punishment. It would seem that the case is lost, the judge is about to pronounce the verdict, but thanks to the intervention of Lord Cromwell, Shardlake gets another two weeks for his investigation and, in parallel, the investigation of a matter of state importance - to find the mysterious Greek fire to demonstrate to the king and the formula for its manufacture.
Matthew Shardlake and his assistant Jack Barrack confront horrific crimes, risk their own lives, and work side by side to unravel a web of intrigue and betrayal to save Cromwell in office and prevent the papists from returning to power.
