Myths in Our Lives. Joseph Campbell

Myths are not empty fictions or children's fairy tales. They are archetypal scenarios with which humanity describes and explains chaos, suffering, enlightenment and struggle. From ancient times to this day, we draw from this ancient source. Campbell claims: myths did not remain in the past, did not become a dead echo of millennia, they move with us into the present and future, accompanying us, even when we do not suspect it.

We find proof of this in our present: we, Ukrainians, are just now creating a new mythology - and at the same time we are learning about our ancient, primordial, long unjustly silenced mythology. Our mythology of war - from the Ghost of Kyiv to the unburned ceramic cockerel from Borodyanka - is our collective armor. It is a way of the psyche to withstand the blow, overcome fear, find meaning where, it would seem, there are only ruins.
