The new book by contemporary American writer Nora Jemisin (b. 1972) is about the interpenetration of people and the cities where they live, based on the development of a fantastic plot: an unknown alien white force seeks to destroy cities, in this case New York, but each of its five major districts (Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island), has its own avatar, there is also an avatar of the entire city, thanks to their joint actions during various adventures, the city is lucky to be saved. The work is permeated with human warmth and sophisticated psychologism, we see ordinary, almost ordinary people who are concerned with the interests of the city, feel their kinship with it and zealously defend it. Well, and the main character, of course, is New York itself.
