"Younger Edda" or "Prose Edda" is a unique monument of both ancient Icelandic and medieval literature, created at the beginning of the 13th century by the Icelandic poet, historian and politician Snorri Sturluson (therefore also known as "Snorri's Edda"). Its uniqueness lies in its genre affiliation. On the one hand, it is a prose compendium of stories about the pagan gods and heroes of the Ancient North (which is why it is called the "Prose Edda" as opposed to the "Poetic (Elder) Edda). On the other hand, this work is a textbook, the only one of its kind, with Therefore, the "Younger Edda" is valuable not only as a source of information about Scandinavian mythology, but also as a source of knowledge about the poetic tradition of the skalds, poetic vocabulary, metrics, and imagery.
